voco – Riyadh, an IHG Hotel
About
Look, I'll be honest - when I first heard about voco - Riyadh, an IHG Hotel, I wasn't sure what to expect from IHG's newer brand concept. But after staying there, I get it now. This place actually feels different from your typical international chain, and I mean that in the best way possible.
The moment you walk into the lobby, there's this energy that's hard to describe - it's polished without being stuffy, modern but with character. You know what really struck me? The way they've managed to blend contemporary design with subtle nods to Saudi culture without making it feel forced or themed. The staff genuinely seemed to enjoy working there, which honestly makes such a difference when you're dealing with travel fatigue. Check-in was smooth (thank god, because Riyadh traffic had already tested my patience that day), and they actually remembered my name throughout the stay - not just the front desk, but the restaurant staff too.
What really sets this place apart is the attention to details that matter. The rooms are spacious - and I mean genuinely spacious, not hotel-brochure spacious - with these floor-to-ceiling windows that give you proper views of the city skyline. The beds are fantastic, which is crucial because jet lag is real, and the blackout curtains actually block out light completely. I loved that they had both international and regional TV channels, plus the WiFi was fast enough for video calls without that annoying lag. The bathroom amenities were surprisingly good quality, not the usual generic stuff you get at most chains. Actually, the whole room had this lived-in comfort that made it easy to settle in, even for just a few nights.
The restaurant scene here is solid - they've got options that go beyond the usual international hotel fare, with some really well-executed Middle Eastern dishes alongside familiar favorites. Breakfast was extensive without being overwhelming, and they actually make a decent Arabic coffee, which sounds simple but you'd be surprised how many hotels mess that up. The fitness center is properly equipped (not just a couple of sad treadmills), and it stays open 24 hours, which saved me during those weird jet-lag hours when you're wide awake at 3 AM.
What I really appreciated was the location - you're well-positioned to explore different parts of the city without being stuck in one touristy bubble. The concierge team knows their stuff and gave me recommendations that felt authentic rather than just the standard tourist spots. Parking was straightforward, which in Riyadh is honestly a blessing. The whole experience felt effortless in a way that makes you realize how often hotels overcomplicate things. It's the kind of place where everything just works, and you don't have to think about the little frustrations that usually come with hotel stays. That 9.1 rating makes complete sense to me - it's earned, not inflated.
