You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Al Muhaidb Al Malaz – Al Jamiah, but this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s one of those solid 3-star spots that doesn’t try to be something it’s not – and honestly, that’s exactly what I needed during my stay in Riyadh. The whole Al Malaz area has this authentic Saudi vibe that you don’t get in some of the flashier districts, and this hotel fits right into that neighborhood feel without being stuffy about it.

What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to genuinely care about making sure guests were comfortable. I mean, you can usually tell within the first five minutes of checking in whether a place is going to treat you like a person or just another room number, and these folks definitely fall into the first category. The rooms themselves are clean and functional – nothing fancy, but everything works properly (which, let me tell you, isn’t always a given even at pricier places). The beds are actually comfortable, not those rock-hard mattresses you sometimes encounter, and the air conditioning runs quietly, which is crucial during Riyadh’s brutal summer months.

The location is pretty smart if you know the city at all. Al Malaz isn’t the touristy center, but that’s kind of the point – you get a feel for how people actually live here. There are local cafes and restaurants within walking distance where you’ll hear more Arabic than English, which I found refreshing. Plus, you’re not dealing with the crazy traffic and construction noise that seems constant in some other parts of the city. Parking was never an issue either, which anyone who’s driven in Riyadh will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The 7.0 rating makes sense to me – it’s not going to blow you away with luxury, but it delivers on the basics really well. I’ve stayed at places with higher star ratings that left me more frustrated than this one did. Sometimes you just want a place where the wifi works, the shower has good water pressure, and nobody’s going to give you attitude when you need an extra towel, you know?
